Body shape of the smallmouth is comparable to the largemouth bass, but the mouth will not extend past the eyes. Smallmouth bass prefer larger lakes (usually over 50 acres) with clear water and a gravel substrate. Spawning occurs in the spring when water temperatures approach 60°F. Nests are usually located near shore where the male will guard it until the fry are old enough to feed on zooplankton.
