Description
Smallmouth bass are a greenish-brown to a bronze-brown color and have a few vertical bands down their side. Body shape of the smallmouth is comparable to the largemouth bass, but the mouth will not extend past the eyes. Smallmouth bass prefer larger lakes (usually over 50 acres) with clear water and a gravel substrate. Spawning occurs in the spring when water temperatures approach 60°F. Nests are usually located near shore where the male will guard it until the fry are old enough to feed on zooplankton. The spawning of smallmouth in private ponds and lakes has met with limited success in Texas.

Facts:
The largemouth bass is considered the most prized gamefish in North America. Its aggressive feeding habits and fine flesh makes it a favorite amongst landowners in Texas. With proper stocking and feeding procedures, this variety of bass can grow up to 3 pounds a year.

Spawning Characteristics:
In Texas, the largemouth bass begins spawning when the water temperature reaches 60 to 65°F. Because of the size of the sheer size of Texas, this spawning can occur as early as February or as late as May, depending on the location.
