Black or White Crappie
Game Fish

Available in sizes from 1 to 6 inches
Availability: all year.

Description
White and black crappie are very similar in appearance. Their backs are silvery green to dark green and they fade to a silver white belly. White crappie often have more pronounced dark vertical bars, while the black crappie is often found to have more of an irregular pattern. The only positive way to distinguish between them is to count the number of spines on their dorsal fin. White crappies have up to six spines and black tend to have seven or more.

Facts:
Crappies are arguably the best tasting freshwater fish in Texas. We usually recommend only stocking them in larger lakes because of their tendency to overpopulate which ultimately results in their stunted growth.

Spawning Characteristics:
The spawning of crappie is quite similar to that of bluegill, in that they both build beds and have a tremendous reproductive potential. They begin their spawning cycle once the water reaches 60 -65 °F degrees, a process that continues throughout the summer.
